The t-test was developed by William Sealy Gosset, an English statistician, in the early 20th century. He published his work under the pseudonym "Student" in 1908 in a paper titled "The Probable Error of a Mean." This is why the t-test is often referred to as Student's t-test. Gosset's work provided a method for determining how likely it is that the means of two samples are different from each other when the sample sizes are small and the population standard deviation is unknown.
