Alex has 15 friends. She has 36 chocolate cookies. She wants each friends to have 3 chocolate cookies. how many more cookies does she need?

45 - 36 = ?

how did you go about translating?

What do you want to translate?

how did you know it was multiplicaton instead of division or addition

You could add.

First friend = 3 cookies
Second friend = 3 cookies
Third friend = 3 cookies
Fourth friend = 3 cookies

and so on

But it's certainly quicker to multiply the number of friends by the number of cookies each should get.
