Before the Civil War, many people in the North were against slavery and thought it was wrong. They believed that all people should be free and treated equally, no matter their skin color. But some Northern people still held onto unfair ideas about black people, thinking they were not as good as white people. While many wanted to help end slavery, others were not very friendly to African Americans and did not want them living in their neighborhoods. So, in the North, there were different ideas about race, with some people fighting for freedom and others still having bad attitudes.
