Before the Civil War, the way people felt about Black Americans in the North was complicated. Some folks were nice and wanted everyone to be treated equally, but many others had bad attitudes. They didn't think Black Americans should have the same rights as white people.

In some Northern states, Black Americans could live free and work, but they still faced lots of unfairness. They had to deal with discrimination, meaning people judged them just because of their skin color. Sometimes, they couldn't sit in certain places or were not allowed to vote.

So, even though they were free, life was not always easy for Black Americans in the North. Many people were fighting for their rights, hoping that one day everyone would be treated the same.
