British India was divided into two countries because Muslims in the northwest and northeastern region of Bengal feared discrimination in a predominantly Hindu India. The two new countries were India and Pakistan. Pakistan was interestingly divided into two geographically separate regions, East Pakistan and West Pakistan, with 1,000 miles between them. They gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1947.
Read the passage. Look at the map.
South Asia After Independence In 1947, facing widespread resistance, Britain decided to withdraw from South Asia. Like Gandhi, many Indian leaders were Hindu and had hopes for a unified India that would include both Muslims and Hindus. But Muslims in the northwest and in the northeastern region of Bengal feared that they would face discrimination, or unfair treatment, if they remained in Hindu-dominated India. Britain decided to partition, or split, British India into two states, India and Pakistan. At the time, Pakistan was divided into two regions, East Pakistan and West Pakistan, with 1,000 miles separating the two. On August 15, 1947, the nations of India and Pakistan were finally free and independent of Britain.
