Environmental Challenges South Asia faces major environmental challenges, especially with regard to water and air quality.
Water Problems Millions of people in the region lack clean drinking water. Raw sewage and farm runoff flows into the Ganges and its tributaries from cities along their banks. Yet people rely on the Ganges for drinking water. As a result, the river water spreads diseases.
Air Quality Air pollution is a major problem that affects much of South Asia. In northern India, particularly, air pollution is extremely high. By 2016, Delhi was found to have the worst air quality of any major city in the world. The air pollution causes lung disease and kills thousands of people each year. One cause of the pollution is exhaust from motor vehicles and industry.
