River deltas are formed through the process of sediment deposition as a river flows into a larger body of water, such as an ocean or a lake. As the river's velocity decreases upon entering still water, the sediment it carries—composed of sand, silt, and clay—begins to settle out, accumulating over time. This accumulation creates a landform that can branch out into several distributary channels, further altering the landscape. Over time, the continuous deposition of sediments can lead to the growth and expansion of the delta, fostering diverse ecosystems and habitats.
