In 1947, the United Nations established Trust Territories in various regions that were originally administered by other countries. Three of these Trust Territories were:
- Palau - part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States.
- Micronesia - also part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States.
- Northern Mariana Islands - another region within the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, also administered by the United States.
These territories were established under the UN Trusteeship System to ensure that the interests of the inhabitants were safeguarded and to promote their development towards self-governance.
