In this activity, you will gain more practice in writing a letter using a block style format. Your task is to write a letter to a celebrity you admire. Some possibilities may be writing to a famous musician, actor, professional athlete, author, business person, or politician. The purpose of this letter is to get a response with an autographed photo.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Use Google to search for the mailing (fan mall) address of a celebrity you admire.

2 Open a NEW document in MS Word. Ensure the line spacing is set to single with O in the before and after. Unless otherwise stated, font should be Times New Roman, 12 pt.

3. Set the margins as follows: Top to 2", Left, Right, and Bottom to 1".

4. Create an original letterhead using a table and a graphic. Make it look professional. It will have your name as student and the Houston County High School address. You may need to size down the first column to fit the graphic. Remove the lines/borders after you are finished creating it (you may leave a bottom border if you desire).

5. Using block style letter format, compose a letter of request to a celebrity you admire.

6. Start with the dateline, skip one line space then type the address of the celebrity, skip one line space and then type the salutation (don't forget to use a colon).

7. Be sure to have at least three paragraphs. Paragraph 1 should describe and explain why you admire this celebrity and why you are such a big fan.

8. Paragraph 2 should state the purpose of the letter. Explain that you are writing for a school project and if you receive a response you will get bonus points. Ask the person how they feel about writing letters and whether or not they write letters in their business/industry.

9. Paragraph 3 should conclude by thanking the recipient for reading your letter, your reque for an autographed photo, and your hope they will be able to send one.

10. Be sure to use an appropriate closing and your name

Body Paragraphs

The first paragraph of a typical business letter is used to state the main point of the letter. Begin with a friendly opening: then quickly transition into the purpose of your letter. Use a couple of sentences to explain the purpose, but do not go into detail until the next paragraph.

Beginning with the second paragraph, state the supporting details to justify your purpose. These may take the form of background information, statistics, or first-hand accounts. A few short paragraphs within the body of the letter should be enough to support your reasoning.

Finally, in the closing paragraph, briefly restate your purpose and why it is important. If the purpose of your letter is employment related, consider ending your letter with your contact information. However, if the purpose is informational, think about closing with gratitude for the reader's time.
