Question
Letter to the Editor: Parks
Shannon Keller
1Dear Editor,
2Many towns and cities across our country have parks. Some of the busiest, most crowded cities in the United States have beautiful parks. These parks are filled with grass, trees, and other plants. They have paths for walking and biking. Some parks have big ponds filled with wild geese and ducks. Many have playgrounds where children can seesaw, swing, and slide. Parks are good for people’s health and for nature, and they can help bring together the people of a town. The people of Jamesville should work together to build a park that everyone can enjoy. Building a park here in Jamesville would make our town a better place to live.
3We often hear that people need to move more to stay healthy. To move more, we need more safe open spaces. A park would give us the open space that we need. In parks, people do not have to worry about busy streets. They can walk, run, or ride bicycles for many miles on safe paths. Big grassy areas are the perfect places to play baseball or soccer. Playground areas give children the chance to dig in sandboxes and swing on monkey bars. Ponds or small lakes in parks are great for boating and even swimming. Both grown-ups and kids can get fresh air and plenty of exercise in parks.
4Parks are also great for nature. Some big parks, such as Central Park in New York City, have wide open fields of grass, ponds, and even wooded areas filled with trees. Because they have so many different living areas, parks make comfortable homes for animals such as raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks and many kinds of birds and plants. Building a park with many trees and plants can also help people by giving them cleaner, fresher air to breathe.
5Parks bring people together, too. Many people gather at the park at the same time, so it is easy to meet new people and make friends. The more time people spend in parks, the more they start to enjoy them and want to keep them nice, safe places for their friends and families. Many even give up free time to work on projects that keep the park beautiful. Of course, when people see others spending their time this way, it often makes them want to help as well.
6In closing, parks are good for many reasons. They help people living happier, healthier lives. They give people, animals, and birds a safe place to spend time away from busy streets. They also bring people together. Let’s build a park in Jamesville and make our town a nicer place for all!
7Thank you,

Question
WE NEED A PARK!
I am writing to propose the idea of building a major park in our city.
In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, the time has come for our city to have a park. A park can be a major attraction for tourists. Think of how many people flock to Central Park in Manhattan, or Kensington Park in London! A park would bring more visitors to our city, and this would mean money for downtown businesses, who right now are financially struggling due to the current economic recession.
What does the second piece of writing have in common with the first, and how are the two pieces dissimilar in their focus?
