He feared that turning himself in would lead to a difficult and painful experience for Johnny, and he wanted to protect him from that potential harm. Additionally, Dally was upset that Johnny felt guilty about the incident, as Dally viewed the situation differently and wanted Johnny to know that he wasn't solely to blame.
