Andrew Young was actually born in New Orleans in 1932, but moved to Thomasville, Georgia. He became a preacher in 1955 and worked to get people registered to vote. In 1961, he took a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the Atlanta-based civil rights organization that was started by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There, Young continued to work for equal voting and education rights, becoming a friend and trusted advisor to Dr. King. In 1972, Young ran for and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 5th District, which was central Fulton County. He became the first African American to represent Georgia in Congress since Reconstruction. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter- also from Georgia- named Young the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. In 1979, he resigned his position, and was elected the Mayor of Atlanta in 1981, and won reelection four years later. Andrew Young officially retired from politics in 1997.
