One memorable instance when I employed refusal skills was during a high school party where some friends were trying to pressure me into drinking alcohol. I could see that many were eager to fit in and share in the experience, but I felt uncomfortable with the idea. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, I calmly expressed my decision, saying, “I appreciate the offer, but I’d rather not drink tonight. I’m good with just soda.” I maintained a friendly tone and offered to join in on other activities like playing games or dancing, which helped shift the focus away from drinking. My friends respected my choice, and it felt empowering to stand firm on my values without compromising my friendships.
