The part of the cell that is responsible for protein synthesis is the ribosome. Ribosomes can be found free-floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum (in which case it is referred to as the rough endoplasmic reticulum). They read messenger RNA (mRNA) and translate the genetic code into polypeptide chains that fold into functional proteins.
