After many failures, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks found inspiration for a new cartoon character in a pet mouse Disney kept at his desk in their Laugh-O-Gram Studio. Thus began the famous Mickey Mouse. Mickey was first called Mortimer the Mouse. Disney created the original sketches of the mouse. Iwerks then reworked these so they would go better with animation. Iwerks animated Mickey, while Disney provided the voice behind Mickey Mouse.

The first well-received appearance of Mickey Mouse was in the film Steamboat Willie in 1928. This also happened to be the first popular animated movie with sound. From there Mickey’s fame only grew, earning him a spot as the first cartoon character on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Disney had finally found huge success with Mickey Mouse and other following characters. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was his first full-length movie. He received an Honorary Academy Award for this movie—the award was a normal Academy Award statue with seven small dwarf statuettes attached. This is only one of many Disney movies still enjoyed to this day. Along with these movies, Disney also opened Disneyland and planned Disney World before his death in 1966. Based on his characters, these theme parks are destinations for people worldwide.
