Mg(s) + CuCl2(aq) ==> MgCl2(aq) + Cu(s)
Mg is monoatomic. You can remember the diatomic elements and their cousins. H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, and their cousins P4 and S8. We write the others as one atom to the molecule.
