Gee, where to start?
Chlorine is an element, Atomic number 17, mean isotope mass of about 35.5. It is a gas at room temp and pressure but is usually found as a compound or an ion in water. It is a halogen and strong oxidizing agent.
One Chlorine compound is pretty important, table and ocean salt, NaCl. You need salt to live but too much is unhealthy.
Perhaps you mean Chlorine used to kill bacteria though, or as a bleach. It is used in water systems all over the world to provide safe drinking water and is used in cleaning operations (for example Clorox bleach).
In gas form it is extremely toxic and has been used for military gas attacks.
There is a lot more. In fact I am only scratching the surface here. Try a Google search on Chlorine.
