Is the second term squared? Square and transpose the 17.
x^2 - 6x + 9 + x^2 +4x + 4 - 17 = 0
Combine like terms.
2x^2 -2x - 4 = 0
Factor.
(2x - 4)(x + 1) = 0
You should be able to finish the calculations.
