Which of these expresses the meaning of fray as fight?
A. John jumped into the fray, fists up and ready for action
B. All the battleships joined in the fray with guns ablaze.
C. She frayed the edge of the cord, hoping it wouldn't catch on fire
D. Her dress was tattered and frayed at the dress.
I think it's either A or B, but I think A is better, right?

Both A and B are correct. I don't see any difference in those uses of "fray."

You're probably right, though. A may be the answer that is considered right.
