Read the passage.

Post-World War I Mandates By the early 1900s, great changes began to sweep across Southwest Asia. Unlike in Africa or other parts of Asia, European empires had not colonized Southwest Asia during the 1700s and 1800s. The Ottoman Empire continued to hold the region together, as it had done since the 1300s. However, by the start of World War I in 1914, the empire had fallen into decline. Joining the losing side of the war accelerated the empire’s collapse. Ottoman forces did win a victory over Britain and its allies in the Battle of Gallipoli, but it was the last great military success of the Ottoman Empire. In 1918, the Ottomans and their allies surrendered, and World War I came to an end.

After its defeat, Ottoman territory was divided among the European powers. Britain and France declared mandates over much of Southwest Asia. A mandate was a territory controlled by an Allied power after World War I. These mandates did not account for the religious and ethnic differences of the people who lived within their borders. Some groups, such as the Kurdish people, whose lands crossed several different mandates, were split up.

At the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapsed. After its defeat, Britain and France declared mandates over much of Southwest Asia. Mandates are territories controlled by an Allied power following the war. These mandates caused conflict because they did not account for the religious and ethnic differences of the diverse groups living within their borders, leading to divisions, especially among groups like the Kurdish people.
