Question

It’s NOT Just a Game
Baseball. Basketball. Football. Golf. Lacrosse. Softball. Swimming. Tennis. Volleyball. A world of sports–they’re everywhere. Most people have tried their hand at one or another at some point in their lives. Each person is either blessed with the talent to play the game he loves, or he, at least, has to work extremely hard at it. Each sport requires the players to stay in shape, communicate, and build relationships with their teammates. It’s difficult to maintain success in any sport without these basic essentials. Sports are fun! They open up whole new worlds and possibilities for many.

Staying in shape is one major benefit of playing a sport. Regardless of which sport is being played, exercise and staying fit is crucial for the player to showcase his ability. Running, lifting weights, and agility help one’s stamina and endurance during a game, race, match, or round. Eating correctly is also a part of staying in shape. Consuming a balanced diet high in protein with moderate vegetables, fruits, and carbohydrates as well as drinking plenty of water helps one manage his weight. Both are necessary to the longevity of playing any sport.

Learning how to communicate effectively is another positive attribute of playing a sport. Again, whether playing with an entire team or only one or two other people, it’s imperative the players know how to talk with one another appropriately. This applies to on the field/court as well as off of it. Players (and their coaches) want and need to be on the same page so the end goal–winning–can be achieved. Misunderstandings and miscommunication will happen, but it’s the reactions to them that will affect and matter most to the individuals involved. Clearing the air and knowing what needs to happen moving forward is key to success. Not just in sports, either, but in everyday life: with friends, family, co-workers, etc. Knowing how to properly speak with others is beneficial in the sports realm and in the “real” world.

A final benefit of playing sports is working on developing relationships with one’s teammates. All teams want to win and be the best. In order to do that, the individuals need to form bonds and get to know one another beyond the game they play together. Yes, there are times when certain people won’t get along, but it’s important for them to see past each others’ flaws at least during the game. Knowing people outside of the sport itself bonds them together and makes them more unstoppable as teammates. Playing an organized sport naturally creates friendships among the players…sometimes for life. It is often said, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” In order for that to be true, the players must know one another personally and get along well to reach their common goal. Oftentimes, bonding with teammates leads to building relationships more easily outside of the sport which is crucial to living life day-to-day.

In reality, it’s NOT just a game. It’s a way of life–a way to transform one’s self from an athlete to a productive citizen of society. Living a fulfilling life means living healthily, communicating effectively, and building relationships with those one is surrounded by. Those are the attributes that make one truly wealthy–athlete or not.
