An example of interrelatedness between the CNS and PNS is the reflex arc.
In a reflex arc, a stimulus (like touching something hot) is detected by a sensory receptor (PNS). The sensory neuron sends the signal to the spinal cord (CNS), which processes it and sends a response through a motor neuron (PNS) to a muscle, causing it to withdraw from the heat.
Parts of a reflex arc:
- Sensory receptor - detects the stimulus
- Sensory neuron - carries signal to the CNS
- Interneuron (in the CNS) - processes the signal
- Motor neuron - sends the response
- Effector (muscle) - carries out the response
