Sunlight is a form of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun. The human eye can see only a small portion of sunlight called visible light. Visible light is made up of various colors. We can see the colors in a rainbow. If visible light passes through a prism, it separates into different colors of the rainbow.

The branch of science that deals with the study of light is called optics. In the past, scientists misjudged the properties of light. They thought that all types of light are safe and cannot harm living things. That was not the case. Later, scientists discovered that light could be harmful. For example, a type of light can alter or destroy DNA and other molecules. It can also cause cancer. It was beneficial knowledge because people could take precautions to be safe.

However, the good news is that we are safe from most of the harmful electromagnetic radiation. Light travels through a vacuum to reach Earth. Earth is enveloped in a blanket of atmosphere that acts as a shield. It reflects harmful radiation back in space and keeps us safe.
