Question

Read the following:
Dear Dr. Brant:
I am writing to request that you reconsider your recent decision to eliminate off-campus lunch for 11th and 12th grade students at Kalmia High School. You stated in your address to the students last Friday, September 24, 2001, that off-campus lunch privileges would be discontinued beginning October 1, 2001, due to excessive tardiness to classes following the lunch period.|
The Associated Student Body met Friday afternoon and again yesterday afternoon to discuss the issue of tardiness to sixth-period classes. After interviewing several students and teachers, we have determined the following facts: Tardiness to sixth-period classes has increased since last year by approximately five percent. Of those students who are tardy to sixth-period classes, only ten percent have been off-campus for lunch. The remaining ninety percent have chosen to remain on-campus for lunch. When asked why they are tardy to their sixth-period classes, the response has repeatedly been that they have not been able to finish their lunch due to the long wait in the school cafeteria.
A subcommittee of the Associated Student Body observed the situation in the cafeteria and discovered that, when the lunch period ended, there were still fifteen students in line who had not been served. These students had been in line since the beginning of the lunch period. In the final five minutes of the lunch period, twenty-five students were served. Altogether, there were forty students who did not have time to finish their lunches before the lunch period ended.
A second subcommittee of the ASB approached two local businesses frequented by students from Kalmia High School to discuss the possibility of a quick lunch special for high-school students to ensure their prompt arrival back on campus for their afternoon classes. Both Taco Mart and Zippy Burger were responsive to the suggestion and will implement a "five minutes or less" lunch special as well as a prepaid punch card for the special for any Kalmia students or staff members who would like to participate. The managers of Taco Mart and Zippy Burger are willing to discuss further concerns in light of the fact that the majority of the lunchtime sales at these restaurants are from Kalmia students.
In conclusion, we have discovered that the primary reason for tardiness to sixth-period classes is the long wait for cafeteria service. Canceling off-campus lunch privileges will only serve to increase the wait in the school cafeteria as the students who would go off-campus for lunch begin to purchase their lunches on-campus. This will lead to more tardiness to sixth-period classes. The small number of students who are late returning from an off-campus lunch should be aided by the new lunch specials at our local fast-food establishments. The cancellation of off-campus lunches will also be financially detrimental to local businesses that have supported Kalmia High School for years by providing funding for extracurricular activities. We respectfully request, in light of the information presented, that you reverse your decision regarding off-campus lunch privileges.
