Don’t Feed the Animals!

L. Han

Thousands of families travel to see the natural wonders of our national parks each year. If you visit one, you may see cute animals such as raccoons that you may want to feed. Please resist this urge, as feeding wild animals can cause all kinds of harm.

For one thing, feeding animals can hurt the ecosystem. For example, ground squirrels like to eat pine seeds. They gather and store them for the winter months. The seeds they don’t eat will grow into pine trees. If these same squirrels are fed by tourists, they will not bury seeds for the winter. The result will be fewer trees!

In addition, feeding the animals can make them sick. They will also begin to lose their wildness. This happens when the animals get used to being around humans and their vehicles, and it puts the animals in danger. Animals are often harmed when they spend time near the roads in the park.

Being in such open areas also makes them easier prey for other animals. Property can also be damaged by animals. Finally, humans can be harmed by animals who accept their food. For these reasons and many more, it’s best to admire wild animals from afar, and let them find their own meals.
