A Review on Chicken Management System, Feed Resource, and Production Challenges in Ethiopia
Introduction
The poultry sector in Ethiopia serves as a vital component of the country’s agricultural economy, providing essential sources of protein through chicken meat and eggs. Chickens have adapted well to the diverse agro-ecological zones of Ethiopia, characterizing the livestock industry with their resilience in various climatic conditions. As of recent estimates, Ethiopia is home to numerous local and improved chicken breeds, with smallholder farmers leading production. However, the potential for the poultry sector remains significantly untapped, primarily due to a variety of challenges related to chicken management systems, feed resources, and overall production constraints.
Effective management of chicken production is crucial for improving productivity and profitability in the sector. Traditional management practices, which dominate in many rural settings, are often characterized by limited access to veterinary services, inadequate housing, and minimal biosecurity measures. These practices not only lead to suboptimal production rates but also increase the vulnerability of flocks to diseases and predators.
Feed resources pose another significant challenge facing chicken production in Ethiopia. The availability and quality of feed significantly influence chicken growth rates, egg production, and overall flock health. While Ethiopia has an abundance of agricultural by-products, the nutritional value of these feed resources varies widely and is often insufficient to meet the dietary needs of chickens. Moreover, fluctuating feed prices, driven by market demand and agricultural policies, create further economic strain on smallholder farmers.
Despite these challenges, there are ongoing efforts in Ethiopia to enhance poultry production through improved management practices, development of better feed formulations, and emphasis on biosecurity measures. Integrating modern technologies and innovations in chicken management can foster resilience among farmers, increase outputs, and contribute to food security.
This review aims to systematically examine the current chicken management systems in Ethiopia, identify the challenges associated with feed resources, and explore the broader implications for poultry production. Addressing these issues is paramount for harnessing the full potential of the Ethiopian poultry sector, which can contribute meaningfully to improving the livelihoods of millions of farmers while promoting regional food security and nutrition.
