Weather Diary Entry: December 15, 2023
Dear Future Readers,
Today, I want to tell you about the weather we've been having this year. It has been a very interesting and strange year for the climate where I live, in a small town called Maplewood.
At the beginning of the year, in January, we had a really cold winter. Snow covered the ground for weeks, and we even had a blizzard in February! The heavy snow made it hard to drive, and schools closed for several days. People built snowmen and had snowball fights, but some families struggled without power because the strong winds knocked down trees.
As spring started in March, we saw a change. The snow melted quickly, and it got a lot warmer. Many flowers bloomed, and trees began to bud. Unfortunately, we also had a lot of rain. The rain was so heavy that it caused flooding in some places. Some people had to move their belongings to higher ground to stay safe.
Summer brought even more surprises. June was one of the hottest months we’ve ever recorded, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Many families went to the pool to cool off or took vacations to cooler places. However, heatwaves like this put a lot of stress on farmers, and some crops didn’t grow well. I heard that other areas in the world, like parts of Europe, also faced extreme heat while they were dealing with wildfires.
When fall arrived in September, we had very little rain. This change helped the farmers harvest their crops, but it also worried some people because it meant we hadn’t had enough water for our gardens and lakes. In October, a strong hurricane hit the southern coast of the country. The winds and rain caused a lot of damage, and many people had to leave their homes. This made us think about how our weather patterns are changing and how important it is to prepare for these kinds of storms.
Now, in December, we are seeing signs of a warmer winter. Snow is falling, but not as much as it used to. People are starting to worry about how this might affect our environment in the future. Animals like deer and squirrels seem confused about when to find food and prepare for winter.
Overall, this year's weather has been unusual and has really affected our lives. It seems like the climate is changing, and we're seeing more extreme weather. I hope that in 500 years, scientists will learn from our experiences and find ways to help our planet stay healthy.
