explain that rocks are made of minerals and over years break into smaller pieces to become soil.

You might discuss cracks and water getting in them and freezing and expanding and cracking rock and wind scouring the surface with blowing sand and ocean waves tumbling stones to pebbles. By the way you also need organic stuff like rotted leaves crumbled in to make soil.
