how would i make r the subject of the formulae:
w=ar/R-r

Take out r as a common factor on the right hand side, and send the rest to the denominator of the other side. You may have to juggle with some fractions.
w=ar/R-r
r(a/R-1) = w
r=w/(a/R-1)
=wR/(a-R)
w=ar/R-r
r(a/R-1) = w
r=w/(a/R-1)
=wR/(a-R)
