George Washington Carver found great success in spite of serious obstacles. Carver was born enslaved in 1860s Missouri. After Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Carver and his family were no longer enlsaved. As a free man, Carver decided that he wanted to become a scientist. He entered college at a time when most of the Black American population was unable to go to college or was rejected because of race.

Because of his love of plants, Carver studied botany and did very well in school. He later earned the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP, a leading civil rights organization. He also taught interesting classes as a professor. Lastly, he was also an artist. A 1941 Time magazine article describes how Carver made his own paints and dyes and painted natural objects and scenes. Carver overcame adversity and accomplished so much!
