Anne of Cleves (1515-1557) was a German noblewoman and the fourth wife of King Henry VIII of England. Born in Düsseldorf, she was the daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves. Anne's marriage to Henry in 1540 was politically motivated, designed to strengthen ties between England and Protestant states in Germany. However, the union was short-lived; Henry found her unattractive and the marriage was annulled just six months later. Despite this, Anne was treated with respect and received a generous settlement, living the rest of her life in England as a sister to the king. She was known for her intelligence and diplomatic skills, and she maintained a cordial relationship with Henry and his court until her death.
