Narrative Assignment: The Last Train Home

[Soft sound of rain and thunder in the background]

On a stormy evening in Europe, Mario stood at the train station, excitement bubbling inside him. Next to him was his elderly grandmother, Ms. Biggerstaff, who wasn’t exactly the life of the party. In fact, he and his teenage friends—Dracula, his uninterested cousin, and Moronica, the ever-curious photographer—weren’t too keen on her company.

[Sound of train whistle]

All three of them were stuck together for this trip, and honestly, they didn’t really like each other, either. Just then, the lights flickered and went out, plunging the station into darkness. Panic swept through the group. Dracula and Moronica instinctively grabbed each other's hands out of fear, while Mario quickly reached for his grandma’s hand.

[Sound of heartbeats in the background]

In that moment of vulnerability, they found a strange sense of unity. As the storm raged on outside, the atmosphere slowly shifted. When the lights flickered back on, they realized they were still hugging Ms. Biggerstaff. Laughter erupted, breaking the tension that had settled between them.

[Light laughter sound]

They began talking, and to Mario’s surprise, Ms. Biggerstaff shared ghostly tales from her youth—stories of taking trains alone during wild storms. The whole group was captivated, even Dracula, who had dropped his phone for once.

As the storm began to ease and trains resumed their service, an unexpected bond formed between them. They expressed gratitude for this moment, a feeling of camaraderie in the midst of chaos. Mario listened, truly engaging with his grandma’s stories. Moronica, with her camera paused, appreciated the moment with her friends, while Dracula, the perpetually bored cousin, finally smiled.

[Sound of thunder fading]

But just as they were ready to leave, the storm intensified again. Panic returned when they learned that train services had stopped once more. They were cramped together, concern growing that they might miss their flight home to America.

[Sound of a ticking clock]

In that uncertain moment, forced into each other’s company, perhaps they would find not only their way home but also greater understanding and connection with one another.
