you multiple the 1/2 by two to have a common denominator of 4 making the problem 3/4+ 2/4 which is equal to 5/4. now 5/4 is supposed to be equal to 11/y so you cross multiply (5 * y) = (11 *4). this gives you 5y = 44 so divide by 5 and 5 is equal to 44/5
