1. I did it this way, but it doesn't check right

2(10-y)=30
_ _
2 2
(10-y)=15
+10 +10
y = 25

Check: 2 (10-15) = 30
-30 is not equal to 30!!!

You need to clarify. Use parenthese; I can't tell where the dividion takes place from your post.

Well y = to 15 right? 2(15-10)= 18?
