One structure that serves a purpose in humans, rather than being vestigial, is the appendix. While often considered vestigial due to its reduced size and the misconception that it has no function, recent research suggests that the appendix may play a role in gut health. It is thought to contribute to the maintenance of gut flora and may have a role in the immune system, particularly in young individuals. Unlike other structures commonly associated with vestigiality, the appendix does indeed serve a purpose in the functioning of the human body.
Humans have a lot of homologous structures in common with other animals, and several of these structures are no longer in working order in human bodies. There nonfunctioning structures are called vestigial structures. They still show evidence of common ancestry, but they d not do the same things in humans as they do in other animals.
