What does a cell spend most of its time doing?

1 answer

A cell spends most of its time in a phase called interphase, which is part of the cell cycle. Interphase is divided into three sub-phases: G1 (gap 1), S (synthesis), and G2 (gap 2). During interphase, the cell grows, duplicates its organelles and cytoplasm, and replicates its DNA in preparation for cell division. This phase can take a considerable amount of time compared to the shorter phases of mitosis or meiosis, during which the cell divides. Overall, interphase accounts for about 90% of the cell cycle, allowing the cell to carry out essential functions, including metabolism, protein synthesis, and responding to its environment.
