How a Georgia Law is Made

1 answer

The process of making a law in the state of Georgia begins with the proposal of a bill, which can be introduced by a state legislator in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. Once introduced, the bill is assigned to a committee for review, where it can be debated, amended, or rejected. If the committee approves it, the bill moves to the floor for a vote among all members of the respective chamber. If it passes, the bill is sent to the other chamber, where it undergoes a similar process of review and voting. If both chambers approve the bill, any differences between the versions are reconciled, often through a conference committee. Once the final version is agreed upon, the bill is sent to the Governor, who can sign it into law, veto it, or allow it to become law without a signature after a specified period. If vetoed, the General Assembly can override the veto with a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers. If signed or not vetoed, the law then takes effect as stipulated within the bill.
