I could tell by their expressions that they didn’t completely believe me, but I didn’t care. “Its true, please..” I wipe my nose, and the guard comes up behind Janet. I watch, my eyes barely open. Did they do all this for nothing?

“Hey, what are you doing?” I say as they pull her out of the chair. The guard ignored me as the other one opened the door. “What are you doing with her?” I shout. He turns around. “Shes being released.”

Janet looks back to me, a small hint of a smile on her face as she walks out with the guard. I slumped back in my chair, panting as I felt relief wash over me. The guard that has been standing by the door, watching the entire time, approaches me with a smirk. I subtly read his mind as he did.

His thoughts flickered like a broken signal, fragments of satisfaction mingled with a twisted sense of power. He reveled in the control he wielded, convinced that none of us would escape this place unscathed. I felt an unsettling chill ripple through me; his amusement was laced with something darker, a hunger for dominance and a cruel anticipation of what was to come. I straightened my back, forcing myself to meet his gaze, my heart racing. “You think you’ve won?” I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper but fueled by a simmering defiance. His smirk widened, but I could see the faintest crack lurking beneath his bravado. Little did he know, the game had only just begun.

Chapter two-

“You know..” He started circling me. I watched, my body and my eyes moving with him. “Those powers of yours sure can be useful here, Collins. Very useful, indeed. They wouldn’t expect a young, pretty girl like you.” He stops behind me and I turn my whole body to him, eyeing him quietly as I listen. “What are you getting at?”

He chuckles, a low ominous sound while shrugging. “I dont know, I mean don’t you want to have better beds? Better food? Treatment? Doesnt that sound nice?”

I glance at his hand resting on the handle of his baton as I look back at him. “I guess.. Why?”

“Would you like to make a little deal?” he said, his voice low as he leaned in.

My stomach twisted at the suggestion, a shiver racing down my spine. I forced myself to maintain eye contact, wary of the predatory glint in his eyes. “What kind of deal?” I asked, my voice steady despite the rising panic within me. He straightened up, backing away slightly to gauge my expression, his smirk widening as if he had already won. “A simple exchange, really. Your cooperation in using those powers to help us keep this place… orderly,” he said, emphasizing the last word with a mock seriousness that made my skin crawl. “In return, you get more freedom here. Better treatment, no more hidden threats lurking in the shadows. You wouldn’t have to live in fear anymore.”

I felt the weight of his proposition settle heavily on my shoulders. The thought of a softer prison life was tempting, but in the depths of my mind, alarm bells rang. “And what exactly do you want me to do?” I replied, trying to keep the tremor from my voice while my pulse quickened in anticipation of his response. The power dynamic in this room was shifting, and I needed to tread carefully.

His expression never faltered as he pretended to think, his finger lightly tapping on his thigh. “I want you to get information out of the prisoners. Whether its basic information or full-on confessions. Take it by force, if you must. If you agree, you wont regret it.”

A cold wave of realization washed over me, mingled with a disquieting anger. My mind raced as I processed his demand; he wanted me to become an instrument of manipulation and fear, exploiting the very abilities I had worked so hard to control. “And if I refuse?” I asked, testing the boundaries of my rebellion. His grin morphed into something sinister, a flash of menace hidden beneath his charming facade. “Refusal isn’t an option, Collins. You’ve already proven to be useful. It’s just a matter of time before they find a way to break you if you don’t play nice.”

I felt the oppressive weight of his gaze, the unspoken threat hanging in the air like a noose tightening around my neck. But I couldn’t afford to show weakness, not now. “You think I’ll betray my fellow prisoners?” I shot back, my voice sharp but devoid of true conviction. He stepped closer again, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Oh, I don’t think. I know. You want better for yourself, and I can provide that. Think of it as survival. In this world, it’s eat or be eaten.”

His words slithered into my mind, casting doubt over my resolve. I was caught in a dangerous game, and I had to make a choice—one that could change everything. The path before me was shrouded in darkness, but something deep down screamed for me to fight back, to turn his offer upside down.

tilted my head, staring at the ground. It isn’t a bad offer, but its not exactly a good one either. As I looked up, my throat seemed to close up as I take a deep breath. The pros and cons of this are very contrasting, giving me a chance to think about it more. “As long as I dont get any significant damage… i’m in.”

The guard's smirk returned, wider and more triumphant than before, as though he had just secured a victory. “Excellent choice, Collins. I knew you had it in you.” His enthusiasm felt suffocating, an oppressive force in the already cramped space. “You’re going to do great things for us. Just remember, I’m watching your every move. If you try to double-cross me, trust me, you won’t like the consequences.”

I nodded, suppressing a shudder as I recalled the cold glint in his eyes. “You’ll get what you want, but don’t underestimate me,” I replied, steeling myself with a newfound resolve. “I won’t take kindly to any threats against me or those I might help.”

He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Oh, I wouldn’t dare. You’re a valuable asset now. Just don’t forget who holds the reins here.” With that, he turned on his heel, swaggering toward the door, leaving me in a turbulent sea of thoughts.

Alone again, I leaned against the wall, my heart pounding in my chest. I had made a dangerous pact, but within its shadows, I sensed a flicker of opportunity. I could play his game, but I wouldn't lose myself in it. I needed to gather information, yes, but I also needed a plan—a way to protect not only myself but the others in this grim holding pen. The boundaries of our games had shifted. It was time for me to take control of my own fate.

As I walked back to my cell, my stride a bit wobbly and unconfident, the other prisoners seemed to stare into the back of my head. It was a rather unpleasant feeling, especially after all that had happened. Something told me the word got around fast. The word being, I’m a freak and everyone should stay away from me. That secrets aren’t secrets around me. In reality, people think they want mind-reading powers until they’re forced to intrude in other’s thoughts, some funny, some weird, some just plain ‘i don't wanna know’.
