Feature

The blues are a form of folk music created by African Americans in the South in the early 1900s. The origins of this musical form are uncertain, but scholars believe that work songs and church music played important roles. During the Great Migration of the 1920s and 1930s, African American musicians brought the blues north to large cities such as Chicago. Characteristics of the blues strongly influenced the development of other musical genres, including jazz, country, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues.

The blues are primarily a lyrical (sung) musical form that is characterized by a word extended over several different notes and pitches that are slightly lower, or flatter, than what is usual. The rhythm usually has syncopation, and the mood is one of sadness, often because of lost love. Performances often take a call-and-response form, in which the singer sings a sentence and an instrumentalist response. Instruments most often used in blues bands are guitar, piano, bass guitar, and drums. Brass instruments, often with mutes, and saxophones are also common.

The correct answer is:

by repeating the idea that the blues is a musical form

Explanation: The writer creates cohesion between the first and second paragraphs by emphasizing that the blues is a musical form. In the first paragraph, the blues are introduced as a musical genre with historical background and cultural significance. The second paragraph continues to discuss the characteristics of the blues specifically as a musical form, focusing on its lyrical nature and instrumental components. This repetition of the overarching concept of the blues being a musical form helps to link the two paragraphs together, providing a clear thematic continuity throughout the text.
