Title: “Ankara Dreams in a Denim World”
In the land of stars and stripes so wide,
I stepped off the plane, heart filled with pride.
Nigerian roots, a cultural blend,
Where will this journey take me, my friend?
My outfit's bright, it's an Ankara flare,
But here, it’s jeans and T-shirts everywhere.
I strut down the hall with style so bold,
Mixing traditions, a story to be told.
“Hey, what’s that fabric? It’s so unique!”
I smile and reply, “Let me share what I speak!”
Of colorful markets, and music that thrums,
Of jollof rice feasts and dancing that drums.
But sometimes I feel like a puzzle piece,
In a big picture, I’m trying to increase.
Will they understand my laughter and grace,
The warmth of my culture, the beauty, the place?
In history class, I raise my hand high,
“Did you know Nigeria has rivers that fly?”
They giggle and listen; their eyes open wide,
Finding the threads where our worlds collide.
At lunch I bring egusi, a soup full of love,
As they eye my rubies, they laugh and shove.
“Trade you for pizza, just one little slice?”
I grin and say, “Okay! Not once, but twice!”
We share our snacks, our stories entwined,
In every bite, a piece of my mind.
Together we learn, together we play,
Building a bridge in the American way.
So here’s to the dance of the cultures we weave,
To the dreams we embrace and the friends we believe.
Nigerian girl with a heart full of cheer,
In this land of the brave, I hold my head clear.
For fitting in’s not about losing your flair,
It’s sharing your spark, your stories, your care.
So I’ll rock my Ankara, jeans in the mix,
Creating a tapestry, life’s sweetest tricks!
