Find the strain and stress on a 1.5 inch diameter cylinder which is subjected to a load of 7.8 tons and measures 11.92 inches instead of the original 12 inch length. What is the Modulus of Elasticity for the material?

7.8 tons is 15,600 lb.
Divide than by the area in square inches (pi*0.75^2) for the stress in p.s.i.
The modulus of elasticity is (stress)/(strain)
The strain, which is dimensionless, is 0.08/12 = 6.67*10^-3
I hope that helps.
