Trip of a Lifetime

K. Reiter

Spring Break had finally arrived, and Becca could not be more excited. She was going with her parents, brother and sister to visit Yellowstone National Park. Becca sat in the back seat of the black SUV and stared out the window. She visualized the beauty of the park and all the magnificent animals she would see there.

Becca knew the 20-hour trip to get to the park from her modest Texas home would be a long one, but she didn’t care. It had been her desire to visit the grandiose park since she was six years old when she saw Old Faithful erupting on TV. Her parents promised that for her 14th birthday, they would make the road trip. She would have rather brought a friend along for the ride instead of her brother and sister, but her parents shut that idea down fast.

“We want Sam and Katie to experience it just like you are,” her mom had explained.

“Fine. I’m just glad we get to go,” Becca said, sighing.

“Only 6 more hours,” her dad bellowed from the front as they pulled in for a pit stop and filled up with gas. Becca let out a groan and decided to take a nap. When she woke up, she would be even closer to fulfilling her dream. She slowly dozed off, listening to her favorite pop music.

When Becca woke up, she immediately looked out the foggy window. She could see the tree-covered mountains. Her dad pulled into the park, and Becca stared in amazement. Excitement bubbled inside her like a fizzy soda. The first stop was the colorful Grand Prismatic Spring. Becca knew that it was the largest hot spring in the United States. Her family leaped out of the car and began the hike to the geyser. When they got closer to the geyser, Becca realized it was even grander than she had anticipated. It stretched the length of a football field and was deeper than a 10-story building.

“That is amazing,” Sam stuttered. His eyes were the size of saucers, and his mouth was open wide.

“Look at all the colors surrounding the geyser,” Becca announced as she pointed to the outside of the geyser.

“Surely a wonder,” her dad muttered.

The next destination was The Old Faithful Geyser. As the family got closer to the geyser, they could see the water being forced out high into the blue sky. Becca took several selfies with the geyser and even included her family in some of them.

Becca was on cloud nine as she skipped back to the car. She couldn’t wait until tomorrow to explore the park even more. She sat in the back seat, beaming and looking through her pictures from the day’s adventure. This trip would be one she would never forget.
