Choice Writing

At the end of each module, you will get a chance to do writing that YOU want to do. For these choice writing assignments, you can write about anything you want (school appropriate of course) and in any form you want. For example, you could write a short story, a poem, a play, a piece of flash fiction, an essay, a reflection, a letter, a comic strip.

The rule is: IT HAS TO INCLUDE WRITING and be meaningful.

The goal of choice writing is to get you to write for YOU and to enjoy writing while at the same time practicing your writing skills.

Your Task:

Pick a topic to write about. The school appropriate sky’s the limit. Need suggestions for what to write? Look at some suggestions here.

Pick the form of writing you want to use. Are you feeling reflective? Poetic? Dramatic? Artistic? Look at my examples above.

Write! MAKE A COPY and do your choice writing assignment in the template attached to this assignment. Reach out to me for help if you need it! This should be at least one FULL page (12 pt. Font, double spaced) OR 2 complete paragraphs (7-8 complete sentences in each paragraph).

You could write a personal reflection about something or someone important to you, you could try writing poetry, you could try writing a script, you could write/design a comic strip, a letter to one of your teacher or someone you admire, etc. It just has to have meaning!

Choice Writing Assignment: My Adventure in the Forest

Once upon a time, I went on a super-duper adventure in the forest behind my house. It was a sunny Saturday, and I was feeling really brave. I packed my backpack with some snacks—three cookies, an apple, and a juice box. I can’t go on an adventure without treats! I wore my favorite blue hat that has a dinosaur on it because dinosaurs are awesome!

When I got to the forest, the trees were very tall, like giants. They made a big, leafy roof overhead that looked like it was tickling the sky. I heard birds singing, and I even saw a squirrel! He was so cute with his fluffy tail and had a shiny acorn. I tried to follow him, but he ran up a tree super fast. I giggled because I thought he was playing tag with me!

As I walked deeper into the forest, I found a sparkling stream. The water was clear and glimmered like diamonds under the sun. I sat down on a big rock and dipped my toes in the water. It was really cold, but it felt nice! I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of the water splash and babble. It was like music.

Suddenly, I heard a rustling noise in the bushes. My heart raced a little because I thought it might be a bear! But when I looked closely, it was just a fluffy bunny! It had big ears and soft, white fur. I felt so happy because it was like a magic moment. I named the bunny Cotton, and I pretended that Cotton was my friend on the adventure.

After playing with Cotton, I decided to head back home because it was getting late. I promised myself to tell everyone about my great adventure with Cotton the bunny. When I got home, I couldn’t stop talking about it. My family smiled and listened, and I felt really special sharing my story. That day was the best because I discovered that adventures can be magical, and they’re even better when you have a little friend.

The End.
