Technology: An Enemy

Televisions. Computers. Laptops. Ipads. Ear pods. Cell phones. Smartwatches. One cannot escape the Land of Devices. They are everywhere. It’s impossible to go anywhere without seeing someone’s eyes glued to a screen. Technology is a great tool when used sparingly. Business affairs and transactions, email, digital photography, 3D printing, and searching the World Wide Web are just a few of the benefits the Digital Age has bestowed upon all inhabitants of Earth. What clever presentations men and women can create, what powerful images photographers can design, and what incredible interactions people can have because of the technological advancements the world offers.

Despite the good things technology brings people, it has a bad side. “Technology keeps us close to those who are far away but far away from those who are close.” It’s true. People are so self-absorbed in their phones and millions of other devices, that they cannot carry on a conversation with someone standing right in front of them. The ability to socialize has declined and continues to do so. From kids to teenagers, to young adults, communicating with others is a lost art. Some individuals choose to only communicate via an electronic device. Many do not have the basic skills to carry on a conversation in person among their peers. Hiding behind a screen detracts from being in tune with oneself and with others. Reality becomes falsified, and humans lose their sense of individuality. While technology has its positive attributes and is necessary to function in today’s world, it is the enemy of humanization.
Technology: A Friend
The Digital Age swooped in fast and furiously without taking a pause. It started and has not stopped. The world is a better place because of the continuous advancements in technology. Think about where the medical field was and where it is currently. Think about all the machinery available to make mass production ten times faster than it ever was. Think about the progression of television and broadcasting and how it reaches billions of people all over the planet. The list is never-ending.

The accessibility humans have to communicate with anyone at any time anywhere is incredibly amazing! FaceTime has allowed families to stay in contact while living thousands of miles apart. Zoom has allowed employees and businesses to continue working despite not being physically present. Online banking allows customers quick and easy access to their funds as well as the ability to complete transactions without ever having to step foot into a brick-and-mortar building. People can even speak into a watch to call someone or to send the person a message. The amount of tasks a person can complete via a piece of technology is mesmerizing!

The world would not be able to operate how it does now if it weren’t for the technical inventions from the past twenty years. People are thriving now more than they ever have! Although technology doesn’t always work perfectly, it is a highly sought-after friend that carries the weight of the world.
