Add 0.1 mole of NaOH (4.0 g) to 1 liter of water.

DrWLS didn't REALLY mean that. Those instructions will prepare a 1 molal solution. To be more specific about it, you want to add 0.1 mole NaOH (4.000 grams NaOH) to a 1 L volumetric flask, add some water, swirl to dissolve (it will get hot), let it cool, then add water to the mark of the volumetric flask. Note that this is not the same as adding 0.1 mole NaOH to 1 L water. The former contains MORE than 1 L of SOLUTION. The latter contains 1 L of SOLUTION.
