Testicular torsion is a medical emergency that occurs when the spermatic cord, which provides blood flow to the testicle, becomes twisted. This twisting restricts blood supply to the testicle and can lead to severe pain, swelling, and potential loss of the testicle if not treated promptly.
It is most common in adolescent boys, but can occur at any age, including in newborns and older males. Symptoms may include:
- Sudden, severe pain in one testicle
- Swelling of the scrotum
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- A testicle that is higher or at an unusual angle in the scrotum
Testicular torsion is considered a surgical emergency. If treated within a few hours, there is a good chance of saving the affected testicle. However, if left untreated for too long, the lack of blood flow can cause irreversible damage or lead to the loss of the testicle. If someone suspects they have testicular torsion, they should seek immediate medical attention.
