Mississippi Childhood

Sela Ward's autobiography Homesick: A Memoir is the story of a girl raised in a gentle town in the Deep South, cradled by family and friends, worshiping Bear Bryant on Saturday night, savoring sweet tea and porch swings, corn bread and courtesy and all the tender mercies of a Mississippi childhood. She grew up and moved to the big city. Her destiny took her north to New York, and then west to Southern California. She became a well-known actress and married a long, tall, handsome beau with whom she started a family.
Midway through her life's journey, the girl who thought she had everything began to realize what she'd been missing. Which is to say, the good, indeed irreplaceable, things she had left behind were home in the South. Truth to tell, it wasn't that she lacked these things; they have been in her heart and soul all her life. But in the business of her Hollywood life, she had forgotten them. And one day, it snuck up on her that she was well and truly homesick.

Destination
by A. Gautam
His bony fingers move
up and down, up and up, and down.
They rise and fall, they are swimmers
Hitting the waves of the breeze,
resting on his unquiet knees.
He taps his restless feet
to the rhythm of his heart.
And his thin lips hum a tune or two.
We cannot hear the sound
that seeps from his keyboard&##8212;
neatly packed away, but leaking music
out of him.
Today he will only play
for the ones who wait for him
at home.

D. People often find themselves longing to go back home.

Both passages explore the theme of longing for home and the irreplaceable qualities associated with it. Sela Ward reflects on her childhood in Mississippi and acknowledges that despite her success in Hollywood, she feels homesick for the South. Similarly, the poem "Destination" conveys a sense of yearning, as the musician plays for those waiting for him at home, indicating a connection to his roots and a desire to return.
