The Veteran by Stephan Crane

A brave man named Henry Fleming is a veteran living in a village.
He has an ungrateful grandson named Jimmie. After Henry admits that he once ran away during a battle, Jimmie begins to think his grandfather is a coward. Henry proves just how wrong Jimmie is when he runs into a burning barn to save some animals. The grandfather dies when the roof collapses. In the process, Henry shows just how much better a person he is than his grandson.

D. • It features opinions and judgments.
