Question

Annamaria, a sixteen–year–old Italian immigrant, was new to Tallahassee, Florida, having just arrived there four days before school started. Her parents, eager to leave their tiny town on the Italian coast for the economic prosperity America promised, thought little about how the decision might affect Annamaria.

On the first day of her junior year of high school, Annamaria stared at the mammoth glass doors of Carrington Public High School for several agonizing minutes before braving her entrance. Annamaria waded through the high–fiving athletes and the befuddled freshmen, making her painfully slow way toward the main office to obtain her class schedule. Clearly, today would be anything but a piece of cake for Annamaria.

Hoping that the school secretary would offer her some solace and words of encouragement, Annamaria was sorely disappointed by the elder woman's hasty dismissal of her in the immense chaos of the office.

Disappointed and still bewildered at the scene in the hallway, Annamaria meandered blindly through the seas of students, hoping to locate her locker through the waves. Even with her comprehensive schedule in her hands, she was lacking any pertinent information about school, such as the layout of the building, the locations of her classrooms, or the teachers of her classes. Her head pounding, her palms sweating, and her heart racing, Annamaria longed for her home in Italy where the pace was much slower, the people were comfortingly familiar, and the language made perfect sense. Instead, she was fighting an uphill battle, attempting to find her way through a school she knew nothing of in a country where she knew no one.

All at once, her eyes started to prickle and the world around her started swimming in her tears. What an amazing first day this was turning out to be! Annamaria hastily made her way to the side of the hallway to catch her breath and put a stop to her crying. Trying to conceal her tears, Annamaria took a quick drink of water from a nearby fountain. As she backed up, though, she felt her back slam into a solid structure, and, spinning around, she came face– to– face with the biggest person she had ever seen.

Wearing a bright green football jersey and carrying a load of heavy textbooks, the boy stared down at Annamaria with a look of shock on his face. As he beheld the reddish outlines of her eyes and the horrified look on her face, the boy smiled brightly. As this 6–foot 5–inch, 230–pound young man smiled at Annamaria, her own look underwent a metamorphosis from terror into relief.

"You must be new to Carrington," said the boy, his smile never wavering. "My name is Anthony, and I am the senior captain of the football team. I know pretty much everyone because I grew up in this town, so if there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to ask."

Anthony stuck out his massive hand for a welcoming handshake, and Annamaria placed her trembling hand into his.

"Thank you so much, really," Annamaria mumbled, failing to look straight up into Anthony's eyes, her gaze settling instead somewhere between his neck and the huge numbers on his jersey.

"Absolutely, no problem! Give me a gander at your schedule because I am willing to bet that I can help you find your classes," said Anthony.

Annamaria felt a relief like no other that she had ever felt in her short lifetime. Certainly, she knew she was better off than she was five minutes ago, and perhaps she had, luckily, even made a friend. Maybe, just maybe, Tallahassee would not be as horrendous as she thought.
