What is the initial KEnergy? That is the energy that has to be absorbed.
Now do yourself a favor and figure this: the aircraft carrier is moving at 30kts into the wind, with relative wind 15kts ahead. What is the energy absorbed ?
speed of plane into a 45kt wind on the deck now is 58 m/s, and the speed relative to the carrier deck is 43m/s
This is less that one fourth the energy before. Aircraft carriers head into the wind when retrieving aircraft.
